Grief Counselling |
Grief is typically an emotional response to a distressing event or
situation. This may include for example job loss, death of a loved one,
separation or divorce, or economic crises.
Our emotional states and how we cope with distress are shaped by our personality, background, life experiences, culture, and of course the specific circumstances of the event or situation. It is quite normal to feel distressed and need support following loss or in times of hardship, and grief counselling provides a safe place where strong emotional responses can be worked through. Some cases of complex grief, where it remains untreated, can lead to severe behavioural disorders and regression into unhealthy isolation. Our individual responses to grief are unique, and grief counsellors allow time for the client to express their loss and feelings while supporting the client through the stages of grief. Grief counselling enables counsellor and client to explore the client's emotional responses to the relevant event or situation and find better ways to channel distress and regain well-being, while respecting the reality that healing from grief can take a long time and so needs patience and compassion.
